BEST BAITS FOR CAT FISH?

Hi All

 

I have always been a fan of catfish and have fished for them on holiday before and have caught a number of different species. However I have never targeted the Wells Catfish and this majestic fish is absent from my catch list.

 

I am planning to do a night session in August at Pondwood Fisheries in Berkshire, they do not allow loose feeding, PVA bags or live baiting. It's strictly a bait on a hook. I am happy with this approach, saves a bit on groundbait etc. However with no loose feed, I want to make sure I have a bait on the hook that should attract a Cat.

 

So I am currently thinking about what baits to bring with me and have come up with the list below. Are there any others that may be worth bringing or do you know of any good glugs that may make a difference to a single hook bait.

 

Mackeral Dead Baits

Sardine Dead Baits

Lob Worms (Recommended on the fishery website)

Halibut Pellet

Luncheon Meat

 

I have heard that leeches are a good bait, but assume that they may be a little pricey and hard to get hold of. Plus if they need storing in a fridge I have no chance of the other half agreeing to that.

 

Any tips would be most welcome

When it comes to wels catfish They have been my bogey species for years. Only ever fished for them in the UK and i have had a fair few on traditional baits and tactics but a real biggie has always eluded me. A bunch of lobs can be good but you can get pesterd by other fish like perch etc. Leeches are good if you can get hold of them fished in conjunction with a poly ball rig to keep them working of the bottom. No need to keep them in the fridge just a container filled with lake water kept in a cool place. beauty of leeches is you can use them over and over again long as you dont loose them and they arnt damaged beyond repair. Hook them lightly. There tough as old boots.

Other baits worth trying are squid. Liver,smoked bacon rind, or even make up a nice smelly fish based paste.

Thanks Wayne, I think I will pick some squid up when I get my fish baits. Had a look for leeches on the internet and came across 6 for £28 + postage. They do seem a good bait, but a little pricey so I think I will stick with the cheaper options and if that fails I can all ways push the boat out for leeches on another session. May be worth the investment if I manage a 2 night session later in the year.

That's it then I'm off down the local pond to make a sh1t load of money.........£28 for 6???????????????????????

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!

I would be saying lives & pellets but since those are the rules It would have to be meat/worms.

 

Never tried leeches but it's the one bait that's only taken by cats so good in waters where there are 'nuisance' fish....tad expensive though

They dont have any Pike in the Cat Fish lake, so I assume that fish baits would be selective and only be picked up by the cat fish. They do have Carp, Tench, Roach & Crucians and I can see that using pellets and meat may well mean I catch Carp or Tench. I would have thought that the Roach & Crucians would be put off by the heavy tackle. My girlfriend is also going to fish and she has never caught a Tench or a Britih Carp (although she has caught a 70lb Siamese Carp, that I get reminded about daily). Therefore she would be chuffed with a Tench or Carp, so maybe I could set her up with pellet and see how she gets on while I try some thing else.

 

The Carp are fished for but with the single hook bait rule I think most people choose other venues and they have a Carp Specimen lake on the complex with bigger Carp which is likely to get most of the Carp Anglers.

 

I have booked a place for night fishing on the 15th August, you need to register in advance at this lake. My plan is to turn up early saturday morning and fish through to Sunday evening. Apparently the smaller cats can be caught during the day, I assume the water must be coloured. I would not mind catching the odd Carp if they took my bait in day light hours, but obviously during Saturday night I would rather be as selective as possible with my bait and make the most of the time when the cats may be most active and when the bigger cats may come out to play.
