The motor industry has been gradually moving to water based paints since the 80's. Customers have been moaning ever since that the paints are less durable and more prone to chipping. Newt might recall GM getting a kicking in the states in the 80's when its new water based paint processes proved unsatisfactory and resulted in a lot of cars needing resprays. A 1999 EU directive to reduce VOC emissions from car painting operations came into force in 2007, so I would imagine that all major European manufacturers have transitioned by now.

 

The next generation of water based paint processes are now being adopted to tackle the unintended consequence of moving to water based paints - much more energy is needed to dry the paint, resulting in higher CO2 emissions...

 

I think aftermarket paintshops are still using solvent based paints, though I guess they won't be allowed to forever.

It was banned a couple of years ago, you shouldn't be able to buy it legally anywhere now.

the strange thing is creosote is relatively harmless to humans (not nice to plants though) yet theres nothing (i think) to stop you coating your fences with gallons of old engine oil (even without the creosote) which is harmful to everything

hammerites formulation changed a couple of years ago (according to their email) so is ready for the VOC diatribe sorry directive ,i haven't bought any for a couple of years so haven't seen if its any good in its new guise

I used HAMMERITE satin black to paint the cast iron guttering and downpipes on my extension last autumn. It has stood up well to the frosts etc. and has shown no sign of falling off yet (the paint, not the guttering ).

perhaps it was old stock ,i wonder if the new formulae needs the special thinners ??
