Cranfield:

Within the next ten years, payment of the basic State Pension will be means tested.

All those that have made any provision for a private pension, will probably be excluded from receiving anything from the State, despite having paid into the State Scheme for many years.

Remember where you heard it first.

I've been telling people that for several years, now!

Perhaps it's age thing.

You can't get education from schools, wisdom is a different thing all together!

I started thinking about life after work when I was about 8. My dad was 66 by then.

the reason that the problem exists is that the government of the day treat N.I. as a tax income not an insurance premium ,if they invested N.I. instead of spending it at least a small % would be added to the pot rather than spending the lot and getting nothing.

Yoxer, Yoxer where for art thou Yoxer ??

You can't leave it now ! :P

OK Chesters - Where do you suggest the Government "invest" it ? let's forget all the emotion and smokescreens this problem has just three elements:

1. Stock Market slump

2. Low interest rates

3. People living longer

It's a problem that exists in all forms of Pension - state, personal, company all affected.

if the answer's one of investment, then where ?

The government is elected by the majority, live with it thats the way it works, and thats the way it will always be.

No way - the government was not elected by a majority! At the last election, less than 41% of those who actually turned up voted for labour. That means over 59% of the voters chose other parties.

In addition over 40% of the electorate didn't vote at all!

Then 40% of them don't deserve an opinion. The real pity is that they can't be excluded from all the " benefits " Probably wouldn't have a crisis then

it doesent matter chuck it in the bank (for huge amounghts you can haggle),even 5% is a huge amoungnt taking into consideration the huge income from N.I. if mr brown didnt keep pinching billions the figure would have been higher .

people dont live longer its based on faulty data comparing victorian life expectancy compared to now (the smoke screen) if you counted in (instead of ignoring it) the 25% infant mortality in victorian times compared with the 4% now we live just a few months longer if at all.

also not in the age considderations are war ,in the 14-18 war we lost millions of young and not so young men ,these never cashed in on their old age pentions hence the government of the day didnt have to pay them ,just intime ww2 came along with exactly the same result ,now we havent had war (in global terms) for 60 years hence anyone born since is still on the list for pentions which scares the crap out of the gov ,hence blaming the "crisis" we are now getting on the public who (according to them) have the audacity to live long enough to actually want some of what they payed in .
