Lucie Fish??

Hi, can anybody help this visitor to the site?

Dear Anglers,

I have been told that an English fish named a 'lucie' is the derivative that founded our surname. I have been searching various links and unable to find what a lucie fish is exactly. It may be a local colloquialism and non-researchable. Have you heard of them? Do you know what kind of fish it is? I am just curious and would like to know. I would appreciate any assistance you may offer and thank you for your time.

Steven Luce

Pike used to be called Luce. Isaac Walton's chapter on Pike fishing in the Complete Angler (1653) is called 'Observations of the Luce or pike; with diections how to fish for him'

I go along with the pike theories, but there is an alternative.

The 'lucie' could be a bastardisation of 'leuciscus'. The scientific name for dace is Leuciscus leuciscus, and that for chub is Leuciscus cephalus.

As we will never know for sure, I suppose it depends on whether you want to be known as a bit of a pike, dace or chub :)
