Video/DVD

Hi folks ..

I have no doubt that you have been asked this before, but a scan of old posts revealed nothing.

I have a collection of 100+ video tapes that contain things that I would like to keep, but they take up a lot of room.

Is it possible to play a tape from a video player onto a PC, then record what you have on the PC to a DVD disc ?

I know it will take a long time and a lot of messing about, but the collection is worth storing onto a more convenient system

PC

Windows XP2

350GB main drive.

50GB slave drive.

DVD play/write.

Thanks in anticipation ...

Hi Magi, this can be relatively simple depending on what you have to hand.

If you have a VCR player and a DVD recorder, you can simply connect the RCA cable to both machines, hit play on the VCR player and then record of the DVD recorder.

Once it is done you can simply rip the DVD onto your PC.

If they are digital tapes, then as above. If they are analogue you may find it better to get them done professionally.

Hi .. and thanks for replies. :)

As most of these tapes were recorded up to and over 15 years ago I would imagine that they are all analogue. They all play on my old (non digital) video player.

Once I can get the files onto my PC I have video editing and DVD burn.

My problem seems to be transferring the video to my PC. I cannot see any "video in" slots on the back of my PC so I assume that I have not got a video card installed with this function.

I have been considering something like this ..

What do you think ?

I was going to suggest something like that. My eldest son has a gadget for doing just what you want. The only downside is if any of the tapes are copyrighted. The one you mention might be able to do the copyright thing, but I should check before you buy.

Looks OK Magi. I paid over £250 for the equipment to do that (some years ago) and it was/is unreliable. I gave up trying and ruining discs.

I might look in to that link of yours.

Hi, I do this ALL the time! I have a dual machine though! It's a Daewoo and it will copy VHS to DVD and DVD to VHS as well. GREAT Machine and cost me £200 but selling now for around £99. But the dongle you show is available on ebay a LOT cheaper!! Saw one from china the other days and it was 99p and post was £6 I think!!

But as to copyright I doubt many will be copyrighted and you CAN get something for that as well for around £20 again ebay is the best source I'm afraid!

Just looked on ebay and:

It is to be observed that 'angling' is the name given to fishing by people who can't fish.

If GOD had NOT meant us to go fishing, WHY did he give us arms then??

(If you can't help out someone in need then don't bother my old Dad always said! My grandma put it a LITTLE more, well different! It's like peeing yourself in a black pair of pants she said! It gives you a LOVELY warm feeling but no-one really notices!))
