Tree identification help..

I would like to know what type of tree this is a branch from. It was in a pine forest, all mixed pines. But this tree I photographed only grew to between 12-18ft, none of its bigger brothers in the forest where displaying these, and the whole tree was covered in these little buds which where approx half to one cm in size.

Any ideas anyone?

Its a trifid, maybe not then, but I bet I'm nearer if I say its a Larch!

Alive without breath,

As cold as death;

Never thirsty, ever drinking,

All in mail never clinking.

I`ll just get me rod!!!

Looking at the bark texture I would have said it was a species of Larch, but the size you give goes against that. Stumped.... :confused:
