never seen barbel under water! Grumpy buggers!

I've been there a couple of times, the tank(s) the barbel, trout etc are in is quite impressive, it's in several sections showing the progression from highland stream to lowland river, and has a steady flow through it so I'm sure those barbel are fairly happy. The stream section had grayling too last year!

 

I did see the pike last year, and she didn't look happy at all, in fact I had to watch her for a good ten mins or so to be sure she was alive not stuffed!

 

there were also tank displays containing carp bream and crucians, although some of the "crucians" looked a bit suspect to me ;-)

 

My kids particularly liked the "ray" pool, and the crustacean tank, if you've ever wanted to stroke a thornback, or pick up a hermit crab it's the place to go!

 

If you are travelling a long way to the Aquarium it combines nicely with a ride on the London Eye which is right next door to make a day of it!

I used to have a pike, and it would spend hours motionless, with only the gills and the eyes moving.
