More over reaction by the Elf and safety police that run our countries in the modern era. we have had volcanos erupting in iceland before but we have never closed the airspace for this long all over northen europe. Only if a plane actually flies over the volcano will there be a risk that dust could cause engine failure not if you are miles away. Just like swine flu a massive over reaction on behalf of our Govts.

Im not so sure that airports in 15 countries or so would be closed if there wasnt a real risk?

We here for instance ,dont have the same "health and safety" culture as in the U.K, but the airports in the north have been closed. The knock on effects in a country where 12% of its GDP comes from tourism, are enormous, are you saying that they do this without reason?

Ive been on a 737, that had an engine shut down mid flight, its not an experience that i would wish to repeat.

I think i prefer to listen to the aircraft tecnicians etc.

Last time this volcano erupted it lasted for a year. Are the going to keep the airports closed for a year? No suddenly they will decide its ok now its safer, let the planes go now. The economy of all these countries cannot take a big hit like this so the disingenoues authorities and meely mouthed 'risk assessors' will suddenly change thier minds. I don't believe anything govts say anytime. ......................

The vulcano can erupt for a long time, without causing any problems.

It's only when it's at a phase that its spewing ash high into the atmosphere that there is a risk to aviation.

(Spewing out lava, steam and various gases is mostly harmless (unless you are close by)).

Then there's the weather systems.

With active weather fronts coming through, the ash is soon washed out of the atmosphere and dispersed.

Or, sent of in a direction where it poses no real danger.

The problem right now is that the eruption phase we have recently experienced has had the volcano spewing out ash to high altitude at a time when a high pressure system sitting over Europe leaves it just sitting there, drifting in our direction.

A change to the nature of the eruption and/or a change to the current weather system, should see the problem disappear quite quickly.

But then it could all come back together, or worse than that, one of the larger volcanos become active, then we really might have something to worry about.

No, i think it more likely, that as winds blow the dust out off certain countries airspace, that airspace will open again. The volcano continuing to erupt will have no consequence for western europeans, if the dust is blowing straight to Russia.

We have had airports in the northwest closed first thing today, then open again, as a strong westerly wind blew the dust out of the area, now its accumulating over Barcelona, and that airport has just closed.

If it was just the U.K shutting their airspace, i could understand the paranoia, but there are now 20 plus countries with restricted flying.

The conspiracy nutcases, are going to have a field day.

And as for the moronic comments regarding "flying under the dust.....ive been speaking to people in Devon, that have been cleaning it from their cars.......just how low do they propose planes to fly?

I would imagine that many of the comments are from people who rarely leave their villages, let alone travel to different continents.

Here is the latest update

You will see that impatience is growing - especially in airline management.

I'm due to fly in ten days time.

I hope the decision as to whether or no it is "safe" to fly will depend upon an air traffic controller anxious not to face a coroner's court rather than upon pressure from airline executives worried about falling revenues.

Free to choose apart from the ones where the trust poked their nose in. Common eel. tope. Bass and sea bream. All restricted.

New for 2016 TAT are the main instigators for the demise of the u k bass charter boat industry, where they went screaming off to parliament and for the first time assisting so called angling gurus set up bass take bans with the e u using rubbish exaggerated info collected by ices from anglers, they must be very proud.

Upgrade, the door has been closed with regards to anglers being linked to the e u superstate and the failed c f p. So TAT will no longer need to pay monies to the EAA anymore as that org is no longer relevant to the u k . Goodbye to the europeon anglers alliance and pathetic restrictions from the e u.

Angling is better than politics, ban politics from angling.

Consumer of bass. where is the evidence that the u k bass stock need angling trust protection. Why won't you work with your peers instead of castigating them. They have the answer.

Recipie's for mullet stew more than welcomed.

Angling sanitation trust and kent and sussex sea anglers org delete's and blocks rsa's alternative opinion on their face book site. Although they claim to rep all.

new for 2014. where is the evidence that the south coast bream stock need the angling trust? Your campaign has no evidence. Why won't you work with your peers, the inshore under tens? As opposed to alienating them? Angling trust failed big time re bait digging, even fish legal attempted to intervene and failed, all for what, nothing.

Looks like the sea angling reps have been coerced by the ifca's to compose sea angling strategy's that the ifca's at some stage will look at drafting into legislation to manage the rsa, because they like wasting tax payers money. That's without asking the rsa btw. You know who you are..

why would they need to "evacuate people dunkirk style". Its complete nonsence. The ferry companies have put on extra transport. Ive been looking this afternoon, as i may need to come to the uk. No problems booking Euromed, Eurostar, or ferries from different ports. The bloke is a wierdo.

Well i'm seriously concerned for my road trip to devon next week, i don't wish to break down, more important, i don't want the skipper having a problem with his engine, either, two days afloat, might just have to freefall without a parachute off a bridge or mountain or something if that's the case. :D

 i Dont think it will be a problem with a car or boat engine Barry! The Ash was falling in Exmouth, East Devon this morning. A light grey colour.

Just seen on the web, that all Spanish airspace is now open, exept for Barcelona, which they think can open by 19.00 hrs. We have had winds from the west all day, its pushed the dust out, (to France).

**** Stop cheering Barry****
