Almost! I've done exactly as you are doing there, and been told off by the experts. Namely standing up! Should you drop the pike it is a long way down, especially if there is no unhooking mat.

Other than that it looks fine, in my opinion! I think the hold on the chin, rather than a lift, might be more secure though, and kneel down.

I don't think Jason Davis is criticising the chin hold, only lifting and supporting the whole weight of a pike by its chin.

I was kneeling and there was an unhooking mate, but it's still 1ft and half drop at least, so I see where you're coming from. Will know next time.

That was caught on the Norfolk Broads. You fish them don't you?

I think the best thing is not to go Pike Fishing!!

I only talk about pike in hushed tones these days.

Actually it would probably be much better for them if no one fished for them. If they were never caught they wouldn't be in any danger of being mis-handled.

Oops, sorry, I replied to the note on the original posting and then copied it to here without seeing your comment!

Tut, tut, there was me thinking you had a possibly unsafe pike chin lift for sale. :D:D

I keep pike (and all large fish) out of the water for the minimum amount of time possible and hold them vertically, with a supporting arm along their belly (similar to cradling a baby).

None appear to have suffered from this at all and most people I observe seem to do the same thing.
