Crucian Carp

Fours

Recommended Posts

Was fishing a Cambs lake in August this year for carp. It's not the easiest water, and I only had 2 fish all day.One was a 5lb Bream, the other a beautiful Crucian.

Thing is, I'd never caught one before so didn't really know the average stamp for them.I weighed it anyway and it read at 3lbs 4ozs.

I gather this is a descent size! However, it appears they can hybridize. How do I know whether it was the 'real deal' or not?

I took some snaps of it, and the scale count seems right.Any other pointers?

You might want to post a couple of the photos here. Easier to judge that way.

I think they breed with roach or bream and hybridize, but if its a true crucian thats a lovely fish. How did you catch it? Never caught one myself, heard they are quite finicky about tackle and things though.

As famous fisherman John Gierach once said "I used to like fishing because I thought it had some larger significance. Now I like fishing because it's the one thing I can think of that probably doesn't."

Well, terminal tackle was beefy gear for large carp.Caught it on 8mm Halibut pellets tipped with a fake corn hair-stop.

So as you can see, there was nothing cute about the rig!I'll upload some pics when I work out how to!

not only hybridise but strangely the EA allow them to be bloody goldfish as well ,its difficult to know what a true crucian is today even the EA demand corpses for record purposes i think

Crucians can only hybridese with other members of the carp family. The common ones are king carp (common, mirror, ghost etc.) koi and brown goldfish.

They interbreed with these other carp quite readily and on waters where both species occur hybrids are quite common.

As davedave says if it is a true crucian its a cracking fish.

It can be tricky, my local gravel pit has proper crucians and all sorts of crucian mongrels. This article goes into depth and has quite a few photos http://www.fishingmagic.com/features/howto/13695.html

Cheers for that Wicker.Only wish I'd caught it on more 'relevant' tackle.Might scale down to get the full effect next time.If there is a next time!
