Squid?

Can anyone tell me if whole Calamari is any good as a bait for Pike?I tried one last week because I was clearing out the bait freezer.Did'nt get a run though.I've heard its pretty standard for Catfish so I thought why not.It rigged up easy enough and looked the part but does it work?

I've heard of it being used, but haven't tried it myself.

 

However, I have a hunch that it would work better 'twitched' along the bottom. You can almost visualise it.

how about filling it it with cork or polystyrene to make it float the pike may think its a strange mutant albino frog and attack

well yes and no.

frozen bait of any kind sucks big time anyway.

but it can work, and is better if you remove any traces of the skin, which by this time has started to turn pink.

Fresh squid is much better, if you can get it.

 

Now, there is a method called popping squid, which i have used to massive effect on lots of fish.

hook the squid the wrong way round, and the mantle will act like a popping plug. pop it two or three times, then let it sink slowly for a few seconds. hold on !!.

I have caught pike on Calamari, a couple of gooduns to! Trouble was I was also after cats.

Forgot to add they were popped up with polyball inserted.
