Rod for chubbing

Hi Guys

Maybe you can help as I'm more than a little confused.

I'm after a rod for fishing a small river, its about 3 rod lengths wide, fairly snag free and 30g will hold bottom. I will mainly be fishing for chub, there are barbel in the river but there aren't many and they don't run big, 6lb is a very good fish and 8lb+ fish of a season. I'm after a rod, must have a quivertip or a quivertip section, that will not leave me feeling overgunned for the chub, as thats what I'll be catching most of, but will give me a chance of landing a barbel in a snag free swim.

I've been looking at Avon style rods must most seem 1.75lb TC and upwards which seems far to heavy, I've also been looking at medium feeder rods but will they have the power? Has anybody used the Greys prodigy TX twintip 1.25lb?

I do a lot of this type of fishing, and can recommend the Drennan Series 7 Avon/Quiver: http://www.tackle2u.com/prods/12ft-drennan...quiver-rod.html

I have the 1 1/4lb tc version. It's a lot of rod for the money and is perfect for chubbing. You feel in control without feeling overgunned. It's got a lovely progressive action, so you can clamp down hard and just let it bend right round when a big fish dives for the snags. It also makes a very nice big perch rod, for the same reasons.

Hi Expat,

I recently 'renewed' my small river quiver tip rod. I went for a Shakespeare 10' Mach 2 Xt Wand.

I frequently catch chub to 4lb on it and it's surprisingly powerful when required whilst being beautifully sensitive and fine.

Whilst I wouldn't want to try and land a barbel on it, I'm really pleased with it's performance.

Alternatively, I've got a Shakespeare Mach 3 11' 6" feeder upon which I have landed barbel to 8lbs (on a 4lb mainline!).

Again, not really designed for barbel but came through when needed.

The Wand cost me about £40 and the Mach 3 feeder about £75 for a comparison!

Good luck with your search.

Sorry in a bit of a rush so havent properly read the question but i can recommend my john wislon avon quivertip with float and tip end. Made specifically for river fishing and is very very reliable.

As famous fisherman John Gierach once said "I used to like fishing because I thought it had some larger significance. Now I like fishing because it's the one thing I can think of that probably doesn't."

I have a Drennan Series 7 specialist Avon rod 1.25lb test curve and have no problem recommending it - I also use it for Roach fishing and have found it does the job very well.

A lot of rod for about £75.00 on offer, if you shop around.Oh and the Drennan rods are value for money also. :)
