Please can anyone tell me how to make my own casters, as being on pension I find it quite expensive buying all of my bait from the

shop. I would appreciate any advice on the subject.

As a fellow pensioner, tightwad and caster user........

Just let some of your ordinary maggots turn to casters - then put them in the freezer until required. I've read many times about very fancy treatment being given to turning casters, but have always caught plenty of fish on those produced my lazy way.

It is not unusual for me to be fishing with a box of fresh maggots, and in another box, the remains of last weeks maggots, in various stages of "casterisation" . Some of each go in as loose feed to encourage fish to a feeding frenzy when conditions are right. All stages will catch fish.

Having said that, many match fishers think the best quality casters give them a slight edge over the next man. I don't quarrel with that, but as I have said, I catch plenty of fish by my lazy method.

Good "castering"

First thing have you got a fridge?I always use white or bronze maggots, not red.Remove the bait 2/3 days prior to fishing.Riddle off the casters as required & immerse them in cold clean water.Place in the fridge if the outside temp is warm.Always change the water at least once/day.

You can determine how you want your casters ie. the colour etc. When taking bait to venue place in a plastic bag with as much air removed as poss.

When on the bank again immerse in water. This will keep the bait nice & crisp.I have been fishing for many years and I cannot remember the last I bought any casters.Best of luck .Dave

First you got to get your maggots, cheapest way is to scrounge them at the local parklake on a Sunday evening.

Put them in a cool room, not to cold, and on Monday buy yourself a sieve. Keep an eye on the maggots and as they turn into casters riddle them off and place in plastic bags and put in the fridge. You get the bags at the supermarket, slip some in your pocket when shopping.

If you do not get to use them dont forget to crush them up into your groundbait.

Us pensioners gotta use any means possible to save money!
