First fish of 2011

I had my first fish of 2011 today, fishing my second favourite place, the local estate pond- maggot and caster on a free running leger with light 2lb line and a piece of plastic pipe as a bobbin, i caught a lovely little roach. It wasn't very big but it was nice because it was my first of the year, and first of fish ive had in a few months due to the extreme cold weather.

After 4 hours i had only had about 6 fish, but the waters were still very cold and the level was down a few feet due to irrigation. All fish were quite small until 5 minutes before packing up the bobbin shot up and i struck into a nice roach of about half a pound, again not huge, but a pleasant surprise and my biggest of the day by far. All in all, not a bad afternoon :)

Have you caught your first fish of 2011?

As famous fisherman John Gierach once said "I used to like fishing because I thought it had some larger significance. Now I like fishing because it's the one thing I can think of that probably doesn't."

Well done on your first fish of 2011. I went to a river stort side stream yesterday and blanked, using maggots on a light ledger and quiver. shame as it looked nice with some good flow and not too coloured, saw a couple of other anglers who also blanked. i will leave it now for a while depending on the weather.

Excellent :)

I've been away from the forum for a long time again but I hope to start some fishing again soon, I'm moving up to between Nottingham and Mansfield ( to Hucknall) and my aim is to get on the bank before the end of the month :)

I was after anything that would take a maggot and specifically chub, but to be honest the rivers have been is such a state I was not surprised at the blank. still nice to be out.

Have you caught your first fish of 2011?

So you now have first hand experience of how the bigger roach give more positive bites.

Regards

John
