Alright guys, just a quick question. is 8mm the smallest size boilie you can buy? the reason i ask is because the lakes i fish are silver fish only and most of them are small. (very new venue)

 

there are some good size chub and bream in there and a few tench. i think the owner said he stocked them at around 4-5lb about a year ago.

i want to target the bigger fish on the moethod feeder really tight to the centre island. i was thinking of trying a very small pop up. or boilie hair rigged to a size 16-18 hook. on a short hook link.

 

Having a quick browse around the net i can only find 8mm stuff. i think these might be a tiny bit to big to get into the fishes mouths. or am i just being abit of a plonker and over thinking it all??

 

Also what sort of flavours are most productive for these fish at this time of year?

Thanks budgie thats good to know. i recon it will be a while before the tench start coming out of the lakes as the water temps are still below 5.

 

Any ideas on flavour and smaller sizes? i dont just want to target the biggest fish, im happy catching tiddlers all day long i would like a size boilie that could catch everything really.

Why boilies? They were designed specifically to avoid small fish.

 

There are plenty of other cheaper and just as effective baits you could use. But don't tell the bait companies!

Why don't you try a different bait instead like pellet, corn or worm. Might pick out the tench and bream with the added large roach as well. Other than that im afraid i know very little on boilies :lol:

As famous fisherman John Gierach once said "I used to like fishing because I thought it had some larger significance. Now I like fishing because it's the one thing I can think of that probably doesn't."

Tench seem to like the sweeter confectionery/fruit flavours.At present my favourite for them is Pineapple.If its the tench you mean by "every thing" then a standard 10mm boilie will be fine for all. But if you mean "everything" as ALL species/sizes that are present then that rather defeats the point of using boilies! If your not sure what I mean just say and I will expand on it.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

You can get small match size boilies at 5mm if you want to go extra small. I don't think that you can get pop ups that small. I think Richworth do the small match boilies, but you pay a premium for the small size and they work out more expense per weight then larger sized boilies. I think they come in a number of different flavours.

 

As Budgie points out most fish will take a large bait. I'm a big fan of 10mm boilies for many species, but I have no hesitation in just wittling down a larger boilie as a hook bait to the size I want and just using crushed up larger boilies as loose feed. It saves a few pennies and allows you to play around with hook bait size.

Ive used these 6mm in the past, but their hard to get a baiting needle through without them splitting.

 

I don't want to start any product placement but the baiting needle that comes with the Guru pellet cones is excellent for hair rigging small boilies. It's one of the thinnist needles I have come across and great for small pellets and mini boilies.

Thanks for all the responses guys. i suppose im not really looking for a boilie per say. more somthing like a small pop up. id like to keep the hook just slightly off the bottom. im going to give soft hooker pellets a go next time im out, might even throw some imitation gear on the hook to aid boiyancy

i have been thinking about chopping down a pop up.
