Small boilies/pop ups

Nobody has mentioned that if you make your own boilies you can choose any size or shape you like !

Home-made boilies take a bit of time and trouble, but it is not exactly rocket science. Plenty of advice/recipes etc available on the net if you look around.

Much cheaper too - but sshhhhhhhhh - don't let on to the bait companies that I told you. :)

Im suprised no one has brought this point up.... If you are looking to catch any species but want the buoyancy why not fake corn? or any other fake bait? another good bait is bait techs polony which has a neutral buoyance so combined with a piece of fake corn sits just up off the bottom and wafts around

I do own fake maggots, corn, and casters. i have done a few tests in a bucket of water and it took two fake maggots to pop the hook up. i use 20-22. im not really confident with using just imitation baits when its this cold and bites are hard to come by. in the summer il try just imitation just to build confidence in them.

i will try hair rigging to peices of fake corn tho.

if you want to improve your confidence in fake baits try soaking them in a bait dip. Fake maggots on a hook work wonders with a maggot feeder or a pva mesh of maggot and hemp

Not being funny, but if you're fishing for crucians, why do you want to use boilies at all?

If you really do want to use tiny pop-ups, just buy a pot of any size you like and trim them down. But for crucians, there may well be cheaper and more effective baits.

I used to make a lot of my own baits for barbel fishing. Small chop-ups (pellet shaped boilies) were a favourite of mine as i could just use a pellet band and didn't need to mess about in the dark trying to hair rig them.
