Suggestions for a decent set of scales

Peter Waller:

They are a darn sight easier to read than dial scales, even with an energetic fish.

Peter- surely with an energetic fish it's going to be easier to get an "average" reading from a dial scale than a digital? I'm talking about getting an accurate reading here, not just physically being easier to make out the numbers, hope this makes sense :)

Jim.

Think they must be damped a bit Jim. Certainly I don't get that needle jumping all over the place syndrome that I do with my old dial jobby. Most needle shake is from the holder rather than the fish don't you think? The digitals have a hold feature so press the button when you think you have the correct weight.

Weighmasters are now made by Reuben Heaton, who have invested in new machinery to produce them to a higher standard. Apparently the old moulds were wearing out. I've had a 30lbx1oz pair for over a season and they certainly seem more robust than the originals. As to accuracy, they seem to match my heavyweight Reuben Heaton 60lbx1oz Specimen Scales, that I've had for years and that really are suberb.

What I like about the Waymasters is that they're nice and light and fit into my jacket pocket. Unlike Avons, they have rounded corners and so don't tear the pocket.

I've tried several digital scales from various makers. None has lasted very long at all, presumably due to damp. So until a waterproof model is produced, I'm certainly going to avoid digitals.

Cheers, Peter. Do they do a non-decimal version?

I use the good old Waymaster Flyweight 30lb scales. Perfect for my requirements.

To be honest, nowadays I don't see the point in investing in deadly accurate scales. If you do catch what you consider to be a record fish - weigh it, photograph it, get witness signatures etc etc, you'll still have a long wait before the British record comittee stop farting around and recognise your catch as a record!!!

Sorry Steve, don't know. Log on to www.pure-fishing.com that might be their address & it might have the answer. Being an American company I would have thought it would be in English!

I love my avons and they havent broken even though I dropped them in the river last season *whoopsy* Very robust and seem to give a good enough reading.
