I got the bug!

Welcome to AnglersNet.

Can't go wrong with Vagabonds advice IMO. However, rods CAN be had quite cheaply and most modern rods are light. I learnt as a litl'un, the higher (usually) a reel is seated up the handle, then it counterbalances the tip weight. You will, in time, find the 'sweet spot' that aids casting and makes the rod behave how you want it to. No-one can teach this though, its your arm.

Janets advice is sound and if you ARE nearby to someone, I can't think of a regular on here who wouldn't be glad to accompany you and give you some help bankside.

Good luck, let us know how you got on.

Renrag

Thanks for the reply, I think this is excellent advice as no-one has told me about rod counterbalance, and I will take that on board. Great. I read about so much violence around Bailiff work mostly, and the lack of monitoring by the EA, and this has made me cautious as a woman. I do hold to a poetic rose-tinted essence for the sport, but I know that personal safety and security is paramount to the male angling populus anyway, and which has prompted me to seek out some company in situ. I hope to address this issue in more depth, in the meantime, as I am only just learning the ropes, I will always be accompanied, hence my call to arms for said companions!

As an aspiring angler I will take your wishes in good part, but if you should bump into me one day on the bank of some obscure river and ask me if I am having any luck i will treat your comment with the disdain of the seasoned carper and inform you quite rightly that luck has nothing to do with it, but that technique and the art of angling is everything, and permit you to correctly intone, "Any bites?"

Tight lines, Renrag!

I don't know how you are fixed for clothing and boots. Not much of a problem in good weather but if you plan on fishing into the cold weather and have trouble sourcing things that fit female persons, you can mail order from Bass Pro or Cabelas in the US as both carry a decent line of woman's and children/youth clothing that is designed to fit well and last just this side of forever.

Little Roachess, when you come back down to Lancashire, give me a shout and I'd be delighted to have you as my guest on my lovely little club lake for a day. It would be great to have some female company for a change! It's absolutely fabulous for coarse fishing, provided you're not looking for monsters. We do have some big fish, but they are very wary! We also have all the comforts of home...

As for rods, I had a beautiful and much loved two piece 12' Shimano Beastmaster float rod up until a few days ago when I swapped it for a rather nice couple of legacy lenses for my camera! It was an absolute dream to use, with a short handle and adjustable weights in the butt to balance it. I'll miss it a lot, but as it's gone to my fishing buddy Paul, I always have the option of borrowing it back!

However, I'm quite happy using my Shimano telescopic rod...it's an absolute delight! I only ever fish in the margins, so this is perfect for me. The other anglers give me a lot of stick if they see me casting out more than a few feet!

It's a Shimano Exage AXS.TCTE, which I've coupled with a double handled Shimano Exage reel...I like Shimano...can you tell? It comes in two pieces in a sturdy travel case, which means I can leave it set up so I'm fishing within moments of arriving on the bank. It may not suit you, but it's worth considering.

Let us know what you decide on and how you get on with your fishing. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have!

For clothing, try Primark if you have one nearby. Cheap as chips! They do some great long sleeved t-shirts which make a great base layer in colder weather. I paid under £2.00 each for mine and they keep me toasty warm all day, even in the depths of winter.

Whatever you do, don't be tempted to buy any clothing from any sort of angling outlet...you'll pay over the odds just for the name! Instead, try your local outdoors shop...my local one is Yeoman's, and they always have great offers. I've bought waterproof jackets, trousers and boots for a fraction of the price I've seen on t'intenet...

I did fall for all the hype when I first started fishing, and especially when I took up fly fishing...I paid nearly £100 for a Shimano fly fishing jacket....I've worn it once! Save your money for your equipment!

Aha, technique and the art of Angling eh? Don't tempt fate and dismiss luck. Even a disdainful and seasoned carper, (only after a few pints or bottles of wine of course) will admit to luck playing a large part. For myself, I rely on watercraft (the art?) I initially learnt from my Dad and luck, far more than outright technique, of which I have/use very little.

A lot of people, beginners and experienced alike, get hooked up (excuse the pun) on overcomplicating matters with fancy end tackle and set-ups. I stick with KISS-Keep it simple, stupid! Which you might find galling, but I find appropriate to me lol.

About your personal safety. You know what places in your area are likely to cause you problems and which are not. You should be quite safe fishing day ticket waters however as most are patrolled by Bailiffs and the (predominantly male) anglers there, are there for the fishing.

Tight Lines LR and once again, GOOD LUCK!

Don't be bothered by another angler asking "Any Luck" it's just an opening line that gets trotted out time after time to even the most experienced anglers. It almost replaces hello as a greeting between anglers and in no way reflects that you think the person may have needed luck to catch. Also after a quick chat you will find that many will wish you good luck as a parting rather the good bye.

Good Luck :D

That's weird i've never noticed this before but i always do that. If i'm not fishing i try to have a look round the next place i will be fishing and always end up speaking to people that are fishing.

The conversation normally starts with a hello or alright from me before i ask any luck, and after a little chat i normally end on a good luck or best of luck instead of a bye or cya.

Funny the things we notice when other people point them out isn't it

As famous fisherman John Gierach once said "I used to like fishing because I thought it had some larger significance. Now I like fishing because it's the one thing I can think of that probably doesn't."

Hello Janet,

since I cannot read your threads-the error message says I am not allowed to view any data, I will try to communicate my thanks in this way.

I will try Primark when I am in Lancs, don't have one here! I would be happy to join you on a fishing trip as your guest and perhaps when I am set up i will be able to return the compliment. Just as soon as I join a club or two. I have cottoned on to Shimano, it's the only name I hear these days, so will let you know what I have purchased and how i get along with it.

Have fun with your own Shimano prized rod, maybe if the site allows I will seeya around here again??????

Amusing. I know all men aren't monsters, but there are mags out there who seem to paint the riverbank with theives and assault specialists, and I guess I was reacting to that. I am glad you mention day ticket waters with good patrols, makes me a little more sure of myself. I am so looking forward to fishing proper this spring-licence in hand, and will KISS all the time!

If the water is in an area where you would expect to have your auto broken in to or to be accosted on the street, any fishing venues will likely be similar to the rest of the area. Otherwise, you can fish for years and years without any hint of problems.
