Im thinking of taking my six year old son fishing this weekend and wondered what would be the best thing to get him? would it be 3m whip or a float rod.

I have seen one on Chapmans site with with a 3m leeda whip and all the bits even a little landing net for £9

Any one know of any decent starter kits???

I started both my boys off with one of these, it has handled small silvers and carp and tench up to around 5lb for them over the last few years!

for a 6 year old I'd keep it as simple as possible, whip, maggots and a venue where he'll get plenty of bites.

don't try to fish yourself at the same time - you'll be far too busy baiting unhooking and untangling for him.

make up a few simple rigs before you go, so you are fishing ASAP on the bank.

I found with really young kids short action packed sessions were best, as they get older and more experienced you can increase the session length, complexity of tackle and size of the target fish :)

my oldest who also started at about 6 was able to fish a rod and reel well enough for me to be able to start taking a rod for myself as well at about the age of 8/9

I agree to the above post.

Dale (9yrs) still not confident in holding & unhooking a fish, and can't get the hang of putting a maggot on a hook as it "keeps wriggling". (13 year old nephew wont even touch a maggot and will only fish with sweetcorn)

Dale started with a weekender whip, which then got elasticated, and has now got a 9' ledger rod with screw in quiver tip. I taught him the basic rod/reel casting methods in our back garden with a small weight to start with.

We also started fishing on the middle level last year but he still wants to go back to the commercial again this year as did not catch enough fish on the river!

One thing I did stick to was a maximum session of 2 hours. Gave him the time we were to pack up at and stuck to it. He didn't get too bored on the quiet seesions and gave himself targets on the busy days.

I have also made him a spreadsheet on the PC which he fills in after every session, where, when, numbers of each species caught, approx max sizes, who he went with etc.

I'd go with either a whip or light float set up with light hooklength or mainline straight through. Small hooks and baits such as pinkies or maggots just so you get lots of bites and loads of small fish. This is how i learnt to fish and it's only when i used to see big carp swimming on the surface in the summer that i knew i had to try for something bigger, but to start with whip is great :)

As famous fisherman John Gierach once said "I used to like fishing because I thought it had some larger significance. Now I like fishing because it's the one thing I can think of that probably doesn't."

What a great idea and a great habit to get in to at a young age keeping accurate records of fishing trips. It must give him a great sense of achievement when he has plenty of information to fill in. Nice idea

Giving kids a sense of achievement when they could be out vandalising the place, taking drugs and starting fires??

What a silly idea!!

You'd think the cops would have tried that..... ;)
