Hi,

 

I'm fishing a lake which contains a lot of weed, at the moment I'm using a marker rod to find clear spots and fishing in those but I think it would be useful to look a ways to fish in the weed so if possible I have some questions someone might be able to help me with...

 

I have 2 ideas at the moment, the fines being a chod rig. I understand.... I think how the rig would work in silt (the weight drops thought the silt and then the line comes out of the silt Lmost vertically and then turns towards the rod and the helicopter part of the setup should be just after the turn?) how does this work in weed, is it assumed that weed is thick enough to stop the bobbin pulling the light straight and therefore pulling the pop up into the weed? Do I need to know the depth of the weed I'm casting to or can I use it to cast to fish and the rig will fish in what ever weed it drops in..... If so how does this work? I'm a bit confused about how people use it in weed at the moment :-).

 

The second idea I have is to use a solid pva bag to contain the weight and hook length and fish with a very short hook length i.e. 2in so that as soon as a fish picks up he hook bait the hook length will tighten out.... Hopefully the pva bag will allow it to punch through the weed and not get weeded up.

 

Due to the rules on the venue I need to use barbed hooks so this makes it slightly more difficult, does anyone have any thoughts about the two ideas or can explain to me how people are using chod rigs in weed, cheers.

For short to medium range, I'd be inclined to go with a stubby loaded float like one of these stopped with rubber float stops and sinking flouro mainline and just plop it into the gaps with a slow sinking bait like breadflake.

Thanks for the idea, I'm fishing for carp on a fairly hard water so I'm normally fishing with multiple rods, float fishing is possible but I would be limited in range, normally apart from the margins which are mostly weed free I would be fishing at anything between 30-70 meters, there is no need to fish beyond 70 meters.

I also thought about using a method feeder with a very hook length (again about 2in) with the hook bait buried in the method ball to prevent catching on weed, an reason this would not work or be less effective than other methods?

The issue is also related to bream/tench fishing using this style not just carp so any help from anyone would be great :-)

When fishing in to thick weed I try to find clear spots but to give myself a good chance of not having the rig buried in weed I like to use a longish soft braid hook length hoping that if it is in weed it will settle on the weed and still be visable to fish.

 

I also like to use a balanced hookbait off set with a pop up, plastic corn, cork or foam so that it settles slowly. I like to use a PVA bag of stick with this method and thread the hooklink through it to ensure the hook will not get caught up in the weed. A few PVA nuggets in the bag helps to slow the decent of the hookbait, well that's what I hope happens when I do it.

 

I also don't go to heavy on the lead and try to use a 1oz to 1.5oz weight as I believe even with my plan for the rig to sink slowly and settle on the weed, a big weight might just make it sink to fast.

 

 

The method feeder with the hook bait buried in it might be a good option, but to be honest I have never given it much of a go in weedy situations as I worry the weight of the ball would pull it down in to the weed.

I was hoping the method feeder would pull it into the weed... I'm guessing the carp spend some of their time in the weed feeding so having the method ball in the weed was the idea. The lake has canadian pond weed in some places a silk weed in other places.... Finding spots which carp have cleaned is easy in some swims but I would like an option to fish in the weed if I think the fish are there or to cast to fish and not worr about the weed it might land in.

 

Does this make sense?

Yeah, I think I get what you are trying to achieve. I think the method would work well in silk weed and your should be able to find those spots with the marker float but canadian pondweed always makes me nervous :D I like fishing close to beds of it, but worry about putting a bait in to thick beds of it..

 

I would have thought that once the ball settled on the deck, if the canadian weed was deep it would just re-settle around the feeder covering it up and so hide it from the fish. I tend to favour a visual bait that the fish can see, more a confidence thing for me then maybe it making much difference when you consider fish find baits in muddy waters. My worry with a short hook length is that it would end up tangled in the bottom of the weeds. But that's guess work and not based on experience as I use long hook lengths in weed.

 

Hopefully some one who uses method feeders in weed may be able to shed some light on it.
