Plain and simple or Hi tech?

Sorry Budgie, didn't mean to ignore you :D

Yes I do think all anglers should carry some sort of UH mat. Does not have to be a huge inflateable raft like some carpers use, but even a sheet of heavy grade polythene can be put to good use, and it folds up very small.

Just because you (not you personally) are not expecting to catch anything big does not mean you should be unprepared.

I have even been known to remove my coat to lay a fish on before UH mats became available.

Hi All,

I think that basic fishing tackle has improved immensely since I started fishing , so basics to me is the best of what is available today.

I love modern rods and reels in comparison to the old ones and the end tackle and bits and pieces that I can buy now instead of having to make.

A cumfy chair seems more basic now, than it used to be as well.

As far as much of the other technology is concerned that others seem to think is essential, I think that it comes down to whether you are on a mission to catch known big fish, or just to enjoy fishing.

Enjoying my fishing could never be awakening to reel in a fish after being awakened by a bite alarm, or as a distraction from watching a portable TV.

Even though I may be considered quite old now, I don’t think that this is the deciding factor between basic or high tech .

I designed and made battery operated bite alarms for night fishing when I was younger, which just consisted of a dim green light lighting up the bobbin on a bite.

Cheep, easy to make and just as effective as any modern bite alarm, unless you are using one to go to sleep.

I want to enjoy the whole experience of a fishing trip though and this has never changed from my youth until today.

I personally think that most of the technology around that is not considered basic, is for those that just want to spend more time on the bank to hook a fish.

A nice replacement for plain old fishing skill in a lot of cases.

I agree that bite alarms shouldn't be used as a substitute for watching your rods or heaven forbid to allow the angler to sleep.

There is something quite electrifying in that first "beep" though. Instant adrenalin!

No'fraid not so I suppose I shouldn't knock it if I havn't tried it.

Not too many carp in the north of Scotand anyway and you would have to be well'ard to bivvy up up here!

You would have to be well'ard to bivvy up down here at the moment.

I used to fish Castle Loch in Loch Maben but that is at the other end of the country to you.
