Me and a mate once watched wasps flying in a straight line and sussed out they had a nest in a dead hollowish tree.

We spent 3 hours hacking away at this tree with an Axe and in the end got a car jack to split the tree.

After the 4th hour my mate said stop stop stop!

I stopped cos i thoght he had been stung or summat. :(

Whats up i asked?

Watch that bloody wasp coming in now.

So i did and it landed then it began to chew the dead tree and flew off again.

Well bbugger me says my mate , there aint a nest in this dead tree at all.

They are chewing the dead tree to make cake for there nest elsewhere.

With that we packed in and went to the pub for a well earned pint.

John........quote "How do chub bend the rod double on cake when they must never, ever come into contact with it other than us using it"

I once fished the trent in a match when i fished with Wakefield Angling club and had used the bit of wasp grub i had.

Then someone said put the biggest hook you have on then tie some of that theer waspcake on and hang on to thi rod.

Well it was amazing i had 3 chub in 3 casts and did they go.

None were over a pound but had i not run out of cake i reckon i would have bagged up.

As you've said for general fishing that would exclude deadbaits for me. You've also said 4 baits apart from maggots, so it'd be lobworms, redworms, bread and corn. The latter two I'd almost certainly dose with one of Archie Braddock's flavourings depending on the species I'm after.
