My standard length trace for lure fishing is 15". Any shorter I reckon is potentially dangerous, especially with small lures that may be taken down deep, as has already been mentioned. Howewver, with wire that you can knot, like the 49 strand varieties, it's quick and easy to make up any length you want whilst fishing.

Turning to snaps, I much prefer Duolocks, which, unlike Crossloks, I find easy to open and close, and they're also very reliable.

A ventriloquist on holiday in the Welsh countryside got a bit bored one day and decided to have fun with a local farmer.

"Do you mind if I talk to your dog?" said the ventriloquist.

"Don't be daft, he can't talk," said the farmer.

"We'll see about that," said the ventriloquist. "How's things going, Rover? Does your owner treat you well?"

"Fine," came the thrown-voice reply. "He's a decent sort of bloke. Feeds me well, takes me out on the hillsides and lets me chase sheep. Good life, really."

"Well, I'll be blowed," said the farmer. "He's never done that before."

"Do you mind if I talk with your sheep?" said the ventriloquist.

"The sheep's a liar!" said the farmer.

I'm sure Nugg would prefer a more subtle colour of sheep, one that his neighbours are less likely to notice. White does tend to draw attention.

The wellies are a good idea though. The sheep can take 'em off just before going to bed. Less likely to leave hoof marks on the sheets that way!
