What strength?

I recently bought a 6m margin pole for some close in carping. Its rigged with 20 elastic.

 

I used it at the weekend and i was fishing6lb to 4 lb hook length.

 

I was broke off twice.

 

What mainline and hooklength should i be using with a 20 elastic?

Not being a pole fisherman, I can but guess, and that if the 'laccy sizes work as hooks do (with the smallest being the bigger number), I would say about 2lb or so.

its the other way round.....20 is the strongest

Size 20 elastic is very strong. I would be using 8lb or so as you are fishing around margins where there is lots to snag on. But then again im no expert with a pole.

Near margins + decent sized carp = rod and line, surely :confused: .

Where did your line break? 6lb should be enough

It broke at the 4lb hooklength.

 

I assume that if they sell 6m margin poles, they are ok for the margins? similar sorts of advantages to fishing at 11 or 14 or 16m i think.

Theres nothing wrong with margin poles, if you want to fish literally right up against some reeds etc, then the pole is the best method.

 

But for 20 elastic, I would do away with the 4lb hooklength and either fish straight through with 6lb or go 8lb mainline and 6lb hooklength.

 

Check your elastic isn't set too tight as well. It should be so when you pull it out and let go, it should only just retract inside the tip.
