That should help other help you a great deal. I don't think we have "canals", I don't know what that means really, and the "Great Glossary" is no help.

A canal is an man made waterway, usually made for navigation in this country. We have quite a network of them around England, a lot of which were built way back in the 1800's (pre railways) for moving heavy freight (coal, cotton,......) around. You may also come across them being called a cut (ie. I was fishing down the cut today).

 

Most tend to have little if any flow, but some like the canalised river (a river made into a canal, often by adding locks) Flying Tench talks of may have quite a bit.
