LURE versus Bait

I think Lure fishing Kicks the Ass

of bait fishing

Every time

I only have knowledge of River fishing really

Rather fast flowing Not a Mill pond flow

I often fish the river TWEED

& my lure fishing thrashes Bait fishing

EVERYTIME

If I had to catch a fish and the simple choice was natural bait or artificial lure, then every time I would choose bait. Whether fishing for Pike, Trout or Perch then I would fancy my chances of catching more with worms, maggots or live baits. Well to be honest I would choose lives over natural baits for any fish eating species over lures. I have fished for a few predators around the world and every time baits have out fished lures .

my fishing was based on a specific river ( TWEED )

the only time Bait for me has outfished my lures

on the Tweed is when i used to fish the live Minnow

in my youth , This was & most likely is the best method

i have ever fished on the Tweed

You never got a fish below a pound on the Tweed with the minnow

sometimes you got 20lb+ Salmon

Though this method is now frowned upon

I use lures far more than baits, I struggle to keep awake when using the latter (since my stroke), probably because I catch so much more on lures (yes but then I would 'cos I use them so much more, thats because they catch so much more...it's a kind of chicken and egg thing.) I enjoy the act of lure fishing, the poetry of long controlled casts. However I accept that for some species and under some circumstances bait is the way to go.

Thoughts on Lures v Baits

You may be right and in the past I should have had the conviction to stick with lures (spoons anyway), As water bailiff I/we (bailiff is a term with different meanings to those I see in here too, it's not someone hired by a fishin club to check permits and tackle) would be invited for a days salmon fishin' on some very good beats, we would first of all pick our days, we practically lived in the river and so knew when the fish were running. First choice was always worm, this to ensure we got a fish or two as it is an especially effective method in the right conditions (and those were the conditions we picked) in the afternoon pout would come the spinning and fly gear, literally for the sport of it.

A lure is "bait" in the context you've used it. Natural food sources are always going to be more natural even in the TWEED (wherever that might be). It's not likely you're going to catch many fish on live or natural offerings if you aren't making any. If the only thing you throw is a lure then you're answer is self serving isn't it? Often, "sportfishing" is defined by the use of artifical bait - not success or failure of the catch.

I almost forgot. (Easy to do nowdays). About the only "carp bait" of any count in portions of Toledo Bend is an artifical blue (sparklie) crayfish (2 to 4 inch). They are really a "bass bait" I believe (?). They have a slot along the under side for filling with Gulp stuff (?). You can pack them with fishmeal (or whatever your favorite carp bait of the day is and you have both in one offering. A "lure" and "carp bait". Don't know how you would classify that. It is static of sorts.

Lures for me. Not because it's better, although they have their days, but purely because I enjoy it far more, keep moving and see more things.

That's sort of my thoughts on them, if I have just a few hours and fancy a walk then you can't beat a quick session with the lure rod.
