Overstocked pond.

My pond is usually gin clear in winter but not at the moment.

I think its due to being overstocked as my friends fish are lodging there for the moment as he moved house and needs to dig another pond.

I am worried that due to overstocking the fish might be more prone to illness.

I reckon my pond is not clear becouse of the amount of fish in it.

Dident know you could use barley straw during the winter months.

Will put the pump back in sometime in march.

I have one fat little goldfish that seems to have problems swimming to the bottom and its obvious that something is not right with him.

If i approach the pond he does swim down but usually he floats around just under the surface.

They say you shouldent feed them during the winter months.............is this true?

I do give them a little feed every now and then especially if its mild.

Wheat germ or similar feeds are given in the winter as your fish are inactive most of the time, and are using little energy.

This type of feed contains enough energy for them to maintain body weight and condition during colder months. But more importantly it will pass through the digestive tract more readily.

Most garden centres / fish dealers will sell this type of feed.
