I agree about the Minnows, a good fish for the pond. a word of warning though, they grow quite large (relatively) and when they do, they can't 'alf jump. So well in fact that they will literally leap out of the pond.

Quite so Peter,

 

I have an upper & lower pond which are connected by a waterfall of around 6-8" in height. The top pool is shallow, has a gravel bed & a strongish current running through it. During the spawning season for the minnows they are often seen leaping at the waterfall but we had never seen them make it over the top.

 

As you've guessed, one morning we noticed half a dozen Minnows sat in the flow of the top pond & all in spawning condition. I kept a close eye on them but never seen them actually spawn & in the end they drifted back into the bottam pool. However it's pretty impressive, that eventually they did clear that waterfall.
