Thank you Peter and Koi carp. The fish is behaving OK and feeding OK. It is approximately 15cm long. So, hopefully everything will be OK. I must take time out to read up on keeping Koi in more detail. I've read a few publications, but there was no hints to what this may be.

I bought a white Koi last year (May). Some small black spots have appeared (about five, about the size of a bold fullstop .). One is on a gill cover, the rest being on it's flanks. Is it normal, harmless? I don't have a clue. Anybody got any suggestions?

What is worrying the authorities is not so much the mortality rate of this virus (between 2% and 4% I believe) but the fact that the illness requires hospitilasion to be effectively treated. The rate of infection is so high that the big worry is the potential breakdown of healthcare systems under the load. tj2, I'd see a doctor if I were you, it would be irresponsible not to do so.

I've been fishing for forty years (coarse, game and sea, but mainly coarse) now and have never tried a pole. I'm a bit of a traditionalist I suppose, or maybe I'm just plain idle. I used to match fish many years ago, when poles were beginning to become popular and I could definitely see the benefits of a pole in match fishing. However, I am a little resistant to the pole for pleasure fishing. I'm tempted to try just to find out, but it's a big expense for a poor man. So is there anybody out there that can convince me of the merits of a pole for pleasure fishing? Pretty please. If it's positive I can use your comments as ammunition in trying to talk the wife round!!!!

I have some success with caster, like watermans advice with the sweetcorn, you can't eliminate all other species, but again it does tend to target the larger specimens.

It chucked it down here (west Wales) last friday evening. I believe that there is a welsh word for drought, but it's never used in this area.

Always get it as the daylight hours and temperature increases (have some now). I just ignore it and it goes away.

Still no frogspawn in west wales yet . No toadspawn, or newts for that matter. Peter Mccue, you should try the Grayling fishing in the River Itchen in Hampshire some day. You would definitely not be disappointed.

I live about 200 metres from the beach in a west Wales seaside village. There are quite a few bathers and surfers who step on the weaver fish each year, especially in the summer when the water is warmer (the little blighters like the warm shallow water). The lifeguards keep a 'thermos' flask of hot water at all times to treat any stings. I am only about 45 miles up the coast from Tenby, so you went to the wrong place DerwentBob.

Get everyone who suspects the culprit to agree to place a certain brand of an item in these areas, and further, get everyone to agree not to open or use any of the chosen food/brand. The culprit will be the only one that is (a) in possession of the opened food/brand or (b)with packaging in the refuse.

In addition to the above very good advice, make sure you buy 'silicone', and not one of the cheaper alternatives. In this case it is worth paying the extra, because the product is far superior.

But which one is wise?

Chris I read The Telegraph link you posted. I note that the Muslim Council of Great Britain consider the banning of Hot Cross Buns "very, very bizarre". It is not the other faiths that are causing the problem. It is the liberal bleeding hearts that should be sorted out. Aanthony I agree with and support your stance absolutely.

I agree about the Minnows, a good fish for the pond. a word of warning though, they grow quite large (relatively) and when they do, they can't 'alf jump. So well in fact that they will literally leap out of the pond.

I run a couple of karate clubs locally, have done for quite a number of years now. Therefore, I am quite aware of the benefits of the martial arts. Recently I received a telephone call from the parents of one of my students. They were complaining that I was teaching their little Jimmy to be violent - honest! I directed them toward the local dance school. Jackpike - fair play to your son. Like I tell my students, when it comes to self defence, if the protagonist had minded their own business, they wouldn't be feeding through a straw. Tell him to tweak the arm a little harder next time, just enough so he hears the shoulder 'pop', then he'll know that the thug won't be interested in 'pulling a knife' or similar if he gets up.
