USB hubs.

All the USB points at the back of my desktop PC are occupied.

I have 3 spare USB points behind a flap at the front of the tower, but to use them means I will have wires trailing out of the front of the machine and it will look a right mess.

My question is.

Can I run a web cam, a skype phone and headphones from a USB hub plugged into a USB port (hidden) at the back of my PC ?

Research I have done on Google suggests that hubs are not too effective if the appliances plugged into them are big power users.

I have no idea of the power usage of the appliances I want to plug into it.

Any advice is appreciated, as usual.

What's plugged into your existing USB sockets? the trick is to plug the high drain bits into the onboard sockets and use the hub for items such at mice, cardreaders etc. Another solution is that most hubs have a power socket into shich you can plug a power adaptor, which will give all the sockets on the hub full power capability.

Thanks jeepster, I have found a hub with the power adaptor you mention, which eliminates any potential problems.

makes sure its a USB 2 version then its fine until the next blooming version comes out.

plugging a USB2 hub into a usb 1.? port is fine but the other way round slows everything down! you probably have usb2 if its a recent pc anyway
