A little clarification:

FFS - "For f***s sake" - A rather crude means of expressing exasperation.

Tit - A rather quaint English expression (sometimes "a right tit") meaning a silly or insignificant person.

Sportsman.

Not to mention the sort of abuse (racist, violent and just plain unpleasant) an average A&E nurse gets on a Friday or Saturday night.

What has happened to the saying, " Sticks and stones may break my bones but names can never hurt me."

I never did have much time for that particular phrase. To many young people have ended their own lives after months or years of malicious verbal abuse. We are social animals and continuously being subjected to verbal attack isn't nice.

I'm not having a go at political correctness either (Just its silly fatuous extremes) because when my Grandfather arrived back here after the war (he signed up to fight in the British army at 16 despite being an Irish national), he couldn't find accommodation because it was normal for guest houses to display signs saying "No blacks, no Jews and no Irish". When I was at school, black and Asian kids were frequently called n****rs and p@kis to their faces - I'm very glad those days are gone and that is the positive face of PC.

Agreed, epecially about that saying. The constant 'drip drip' of verbal abuse directed towards one over identity is potentially far more hurtful than a smack in the face, I have experienced them both. Suggesting that only the insecure and insignificant are bothered by 'mere words' is akin to saying that only the physically weak/old/very young are affected by direct violence , so 'tough on them'!

The soldiers never said a word and were getting up to leave when My Dad said to the MPs they stay, any bloke who fights beside me drinks beside me now F....
