Baitrunner HELP

Hi,

I currently live in Spain and want to by a 'small' baitrunner. I'll need to ship the reel out here. What I'm after is advice on one that I can confidently buy without viewing/testing/handling the reel hence me asking you guys out there as I've had good advice before. I've got the Med/Larg. Shimano's which I use for carp I expect to be 10lbs and over but I'd like a smaller reel that'll comfortably handle the 'under' tens that are physco's and think they are much larger and will snatch your rod off your sticks in the blink of an eye. I know you shouldn't take your eye off your tackle but when you pour a cuppa it helps to have a good 'runner' attached to your rod! As said I'm relying on your help as I can't test the reel before use.

Any help/advice will be greatly appreciated,

Cheers eaglet B)

Hi

Instead of a baitrunner I prefer a fighting drag in the smaller sizes.

Push the lever to the left and you have free spool. Back to the centre to go to pre set drag

I live in France and have used this company several times with no problems.

The also deliver to Spain

Sportsman, how do you find the rear drags. Ive tried a few and have never been satisfied with them. The biggest problem was they were never as smooth as a front drag reel.

also is it a true free spool or does it just loosen up the drag ?

Andy

as far as I know it just slackens the drag off to give as near a free spool as makes no difference. You just have to remember to push the lever back to centre before striking, in the same way that you have to remember to turn the reel handle to disengage the free spool on a bait runner (go on, own up, I bet you've had a run and picked the rod up and struck while it was still in freespool, or is it just me  )

As far as rear drag versus front drag you may be right. I have a Spro Redarc with the best (front) drag on any reel. Having said that the rear drag works as well as I need it to and better than any of my 3 Shimanos.

As you might have noticed, I am a big fan of Spro reels, I currently have 7.

I am however looking for another Shimano 5010 baitrunner so that I can have 3 on my refurbed AK47 carp rods, but that's just because they will look nice on the rod pod B)

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. I have a Shimano 4000 GTM which is approx. 7yrs old since I bought it, never serviced (been here nearly 5 yrs) and I love it but I've never noticed the fighting drag to be as good as a free spool! I've just been on a site for Spro reels but it seems they only do 2 :-

http://www.scribd.com/doc/66870764/Spro-Reels-2012 p33.

Can't really make out the size, I'd like the same as the Shimano that I have if possible but they don't do my model any more. I notice that the Spro reels have quite a few? Any other thoughts, it's seems you may be my only 'adviser' at the moment,

Cheers :D

I have a 3500GTM Shimano with fighting drag but I prefer the drag on the the Spro. The fighting drag is not a free spool but it does what I need it to do when I am feeder fishing, allowing the fish to take line and not pull my rod in. It is lighter and less cumbersome than a free spool.

An 840 size dragmaster would match the size but why not save your money and get your Shimano set up as you want it.

Have a look at the Shimano 2500 "baby" baitrunners. Not everyone likes them - they don't feel as reassuringly solid as the earlier models - but mine have managed everything that's been thrown at them without even a hint of a problem.

They're nice and smooth; light as a feather (compared to others); clutch is decent; retrieve is fast enough for distance use; line lay is good. What more could you want?

DL2500 is on the left; the Shimano Supermatch float reel on the right gives an indication of size.

I'll chime in again with a recommendation for the Mitchell Avorunner 3500. I've got a couple of these reels and I'm really pleased I bought them (started with one then added another later). The V2 has now superseded the original, it has more ballraces and a slightly different design, JV44 has one of those and he's happy with it. They're very smooth and both the drag and baitrunner settings have a wide range of adjustment, line lay is good and the bail arm action crisp. The line clip on the spools looks to be there for keeping things tidy when the reel's not being used, it doesn't look robust enough for continuous clipping up when casting but I don't do that so it's fine for me.

At less than £40 worth considering;

It's never a 'six', let's put it back
