Course on the Fly

Hi all

The inlaws actually got me a decent present this Xmas - a copy of Course fish on the Fly.

I`ve just finished reading it and I have to say I'm very tempted to give this a go. Anyone actually tried perch or carp on fly tackle?

I have caught most coarse species on fly; only opne carp however but intend to spend some time on them this year. Fly will catch you a huge number of fish in the right conditions- chub and dace especially.Perch are easy to catch on fly - small lures work well. Location is the key skill in all flyfshing obviously as you can't attract the fish to you by feeding etc. Best advice I can give is - assuming you are river fishing- buy decent breathble chest waders and open your mind to where you fish. Do not stick to the places which might look good to leger or floatfish; look at very shallow water- you will be amazed waht it can hold.

I've caught chub, dace, bleak and perch on the fly on purpose, and I've caught pike while fishing for perch and roach while fishing for trout. It's good fun!

I fish for Rudd and Carp on the fly.

Rudd are much harder to hit and easier to spook than trout.

Carp are just good fun. A 10lb carp on a 5 weight fly rod would put a smile on most peoples faces

The wild browns I fish for are thick as the proverbial!

I do know somewhere you can't get near the damned fish, but I reckon chub would be just as spooky.

The first several fish I ever caught on the fly were rudd, and I can confirm that they're difficult to hit.

Since then I've caught quite a few coarse species on the fly, both predatory and non-predatory, and it's certainly a viable metod. In fact, sometimes it's the best method on the day. What's more it's a lot of fun!

When I was a kid I just couldn't help scaling down my float tackle and trying to hit the lightning fast bites of bleak.

Now a good few decades later, I have the same trouble concentrating on hooking a trout or two when I see Rudd dimpling the surface.

Out comes the 3wt, and I'm back to being a kid again. :-)

I've had a few pasties on a fly rod at the local carp puddle.

Steve wouldn't let me use my fly rod at the last Wingham fish-in :-(
