phoned up a firm today for a job as a pcb assembler ( previous applicants need not apply) no mention of wages in advert ,phone conversation as follows

ME "high saw your add in so and so ,can you give me a clue to what the wages are "

THEM " i dont know i`l put you through to manufacturing "

time passes......

THEM " can i help "

ME " saw your add etc"

THEM "i dont know i`l put you through to production manager"

time passes......

THEM " can i help"

ME "i saw etc"

THEM "ah you need manufacturing"

ME "ive just been diverted by manufacturing"

THEM "ah ,well the wages are based on how good you are in the job"

ME "so its piece work then?"

THEM "no ,it depends on how good you are "

ME " experience then?"

THEM "sort of it depends if you get any rejects"

ME "can you tell me approximatly the wages then"

THEM "it depends how good you are"

ME "how would i find out how good i am "

THEM "youl see by how much you earn at the end of the month"

ME "yes but what is the average wage then" getting very annoyed :(

THEM "it depends on how good you are"

ME "***GGG$$$$££$%^% ,)))(((LJGHTUU£"**** ." sound of slamming down phone

what do you do ?start work wait till the end of the month to see what your earning

this is not a small firm so no excuse ,even a from to wage slot in the add would stop this bull

maybe the previous applicants asked the same questions as i

Maybe they just get someone in, get a month's work out of them, then at the end of that month say 'Oh you weren't very good so we're not going to pay you. Try harder next month.' Then when employee leaves they re-advertise same job and wait for the next mug...

Wonder how much the person you spoke to is on?

Could perhaps have said something like ' Well I'm sure you get paid f*** all in that case' just before you hung up.

seems a bit funny i was put through to production ,i would have though someone in the office would have dealt with it

my sister got a home job a couple of years ago assembling small components for something or other (it was part of something else ,everthing was push fitted)

when she had completed her lot (she had to pay for the components ,supposedly getting her money back + an income on return)

EVERY one was faulty ? she got no money and no refund ,the firm still advertises now

i cannot see why these firms can prey on people and still operate

she complained to the office of fair trading (she`s like me a bit stubborn) after several letters the OFT said they had a large dossier on the firm and several hundred complaints ,obviasly nothing was done as they still exist now ,a good ploy is they stop trading then "sell" the business name to another person who carries on as before :(

another thing that pees me off is fake auctions ,they openly rip people of but nothing is done ,sell onions by the pound though and your strung up

Do you mean that building sites have gone PC and you no longer hear that sort of thing?

Building trade is not what it used to be, Jim. Used to be a bit like "Auf Vedersien" specially at break times. Dirty mugs, strong tea(?), fags (and ash). Good banter though.

Now it's all specialist tradesmen scrambling to earn as much as possible, serious discussions going on re prices, usually on the mobile; during tea break???

Many of them even wear "protective clothing" to save getting their hands dirty!!!! and drinking from tins, usually Coke.

Card schools going, if the kitty was not won, it was held over to the next break, and some crafty B*****s would try to muscle in on the game!!!

Mostly good memories of good blokes,

Building trade is not what it used to be, Jim.

Those were the days!

I remember a game of 9 card brag in the nissen hut lasting 3 days at 6d a hand. Lofty Cox won it with 4 4s.

In the 60s a bricklayer could earn the equivilant of 300 gallons of petrol a week even in Dorset.

Once the accountants started to get involved, all the friendship went, the blokes were screwed up and all the cars on site were suddenly old bangers instead of nearly new ones.

You never know who is going to turn up for work from one day to the next nowadays.

Like one bricklayer said to a young clerk of works. "The trouble is, everything that I have been doing for the last 40 years is all wrong".

Fraid that's how it goes.

Same as...

jobs for life, Multi level marketing scams, pension schemes, credit cards, etc

Something that surprised me.....

ALDI checkout staff get £7.65 an hour (£15k pro rata) & managers £32k!!

http://www.aldi-stores.co.uk/recruitment/r...recruit_nav.htm

I've a book out from the lib atm

"Jobs for the over 50s, by Linda Greenbury"

might be worth a look (not had a look at it yet)

btw, I started a cleaning job last week, 6.30-80 am every soddin morning! ....

(for 4 weeks), through the dss "Permitted Work" scheme. (to get long term unemployed loons back scaring employees :) )

but, here's what the dss have said:

- If you start work and then let them know, all benefits will be stopped.

- You have to give all details of the job you've been accepted for, for the dss have to make a decision before you start work. Unfortunately this decision takes a week, by which time most of the lower paid jobs will have be filled by someone else.

- I earn £4.25 an hour * 10 hours = £42.50 a week,

but the IS only let me keep £20pw ie equiv of £2 an hour (well not really equiv, but kinda)

Come the revolution brother!

Liam

ps Believe it or not, I'm cleaning the secure computer room for a national bank and have an hour by myself to have a "look, see" :)

I also get to clean the sys admins room, which, since it is so cramped, they go off for a coffee leaving their computers logged in.

Better not say too much.....,

coz I suppose you'll all be reading about it a newspaper soon <*evil g*>

When the new Aldi store opened in Weymouth, the checkout staff had to learn the prices of every item that was brought to them, and key the value in as they passed them through.

I believe the staff turnover was horrendous and many people did not like to buy there because of the mistakes, perceived or otherwise.

They have now changed to barcode scanning like their rivals LIDL and the rest.

The staff wages have remained unchanged at the levels you have quoted.

Just the job for someone who is Microsoft Certified!!
