i have watched this programme on Discovery Shed many times. considering how much grief we all give Robson Green this Cyril guy is just as bad. His bad handling of fish and disregard for their welfare is appalling. i just watched one where he hooked a large fish on the edge of very fast rocky water on a light lure rod and could not stop it racing into the flow with the inevitably line break. not realising what he had done wrong he tried it again with the same outcome. This dropping an angler into a wilderness and film the outccome is just awful. At least John Wilson and Jeremy Wade actually know what they are doing when they fish round the world. This paints a very bad picture of angling IMHO.

I like Cyril's program's, part travel show and part angling but then again I watch all Robsons stuff and enjoy them aswell. I see what you mean about the fishing style but from what I have seen of fishing around the world Cyril is right up there on fish welfare. The norm seems to be to bully fish in as quick as possible with line breaks and bite offs par for the coarse. I have always tried not to judge anglers abroad by mine or UK standards but do sometimes worry that such ideas may creep in to UK fishing. It's one of the reasons I posted abou boga grips for Pike and holding Perch by their mouths on another thread, all influences picked up from abroad and maybe not the best from a fish welfare point of view.

 

At least Cyril tries to release all his fish even when his guides may not want to. From what I have seen of angling around the world Cyril is one of the good guys. But judged by UK standards I can see why some might be bothered. A good indicator is to compare what he is doing when compaired to who ever he is fishing along side. His welfare credentials are always better then his guides/hosts etc and many of these are pro's or top guides. I sort of expect the welfare from subsistent anglers to be a little questionable but in general most people around the world do not moddy coddle fish they way we do. I think a lot of the anglers Cyril fishes with are puzzled by his C&R practices and overly good fish welfare.

Cyril's a crazy dude, for sure, but his heart's in the right place and it's hard to be uninspired by his enthusiasm. The few occasions on which he seems to make a gaffe are far outweighed by his other qualities. He is gracious as host and guest, having that rare ability to get on with all that he meets, and for that quality alone he gets my vote.

If he headed a UK-based angling series I reckon it would be unmissable.

When in Rome - - - - - - - I sometimes cringe at "UK fish welfare". ie. mats, salves, non-ferrous hooks, complex tangle rigs, etc. I suspect there is no where in the world that fish die as the result of anglers justifying an uncomfortable conscience. They are just fish.

well also i actually don't think he is really any good. he makes schoolboy errors when playing fish and yes i am worried that this is creeping into the UK and the risk is the antis will have a field day if these practices become widespread in the UK. especially in fresh water.

Flurocarbon leaders are common practice for many predators around the world, I think it is very easy to fall in to trying to impose our methods/values on overseas anglers who already find our practices very laughable and over the top.

 

I do not want to see anglers deliberatly fishing for Pike in this country with flurocarbon but it is an excepted practice else where. I have no problem with anglers fishing for Zander or Perch with fluro even if it means they will catch the odd Pike. We can not and maybe should not try to impose our values on the rest of the world. However when they fish over here then maybe they should follow our traditions, when in Rome and all that.

Aren't the leaders used 100lb b/s or more? Would this prevent bite-offs?

They tend to use heavy floro leaders for the Pike, it does not prevent bite offs but they do offer some protection. They do drop to very low BS for Zander and Perch.
