Some more for you ....

Now pay attention ....

Why is someone who is drunk refered to as being "P*ssed" ?

Origin of "Spoiling the ship for a Hapoth of tar" ?

Why are Policemen called "Bobbies" ?

wotawoppa, many times in my life I have been called a bullsh!tter. I must confess with pride that this is true. But I knew there would come a time when I would behold a master. You are that person, I salute you!

No 'official' derivation - just a term that developed, really.

Origin of "Spoiling the ship for a Hapoth of tar" ?

Tar was used to caulk the planking of wooden ships. Thus, the saving of a 'hap'orth' - a half-penny, or ha'penny worth - of tar could result in a leaky ship.

Why are Policemen called "Bobbies" ?

After Sir Robert Peel, the founder of the modern police force. They were also known as 'Peelers' for the same reason.

Ok, here's one; who was the first person to fly an aircraft in Australia?

Clue - Famous bloke, but for reasons other than aviation.

Terry

And on the eighth day God created carp fishing...and he saw that it was pukka.

Wordbender ..

You are right on the "Bobbies".

As to the "Hapoth Of Tar" ...

One theory is that the actual phrase itself is mispronounced. It should be "Spoiling the SHEEP for a Haporth of Tar".

In the days when sheep were sheared using hand shears, the sheep would often end up with bad cut wounds in their skin. This wound was sealed by dabbing it with a stick covered with soft tar, thereby sealing the wound from infection.

If the wound was not so treated the sheep would often die from infection in the wound.

Thus ... "Spoiling the Sheep for a Haporth of tar"

The Older I get .. The better I was.
