The monitoring/control software for a UPS can be nice but it has absolutely nothing to do with the UPS functioning as a battery backup and to provide power to the PC if you have low house voltage or power failure.

About the only really valuable feature you lose without the software and the serial connection to the PC is the ability to have Powercard do an automatic shutdown of the PC in the event of a power loss.

Given the probable age of the unit, you'd be well advised to do a quick bit of testing too. PC running but nothing open (so you don't lose data) and pull the power cord out of the wall socket and time how long until the system crashes. If it is as long as 4-5 minutes you are fine (a new one was only good for 9-10 minutes with the lighter demands of 1998-1999 PCs) but if much less, you should strongly consider replacing the internal battery.
