VHS to DVD

You need to get yourself a V Capture card.

This simply is fitted into your computer & has video & audio in. All you need to do is to connect it to your TV/Video & you can capture anything to digital format.

You get what you pay for with TV cards so invest in a good one. You will also need a good cpu speed for good quality captures, so don't try & do it with an old 486!!

As noted re getting what you pay for.

If you plan to do quite a few of these, by all means invest in your own setup. Otherwise, it might be better to pay to have it done. They should be able to give you a cleaner CD/DVD than the original now on the tape.

Sorry but I'm not familiar with any local companies that do the conversions but I'm guessing there are plenty available to you.

Kev, I think that if you have an analogue tape then you will need to convert it to digital before you can do anything with it on your pc.

I bought a "Dazzle Hollywood DV bridge"to convert the analogue signal into digital.

Cheers for feedback lads. Poledark I have a camcorder which uses those small VHS tapes will I have to transfer them onto a normal VHS tape via my videorecorder. Once on VHS tape can video be plugged straight into back of computer via the video capture card? What sort of software will I require?

Thanks again for any help

Kev,A couple of years ago, when I wanted to edit my old vhs and video8 tapes I was very limited in the number of options. Most capture cards would only allow the capture of direct digital.

Plenty of capture cards on offer butno good if you had analogue tapes, so I had to pay through the nose for a converter.

I have just checked PC world and there are several capture cards that seem to offer a dual option of digi and analogue at quite a reasonable price. Not having checked further I would think that the main difference in price would be in the software that each contain.

Go for it,

I used an ATI card that had TV in & out on it to do the same when making a short CD vid at work a few years ago. The ATI card (rage 128pro) came with loads of leads for connecting AV signals from various devices to it & the old vhs camcorder we used plugged in fine.

We then recorded the video to the HDD (used up 4gb for 20mins vid) edited the vid with the software supplied with the card and saved the new demo video as an AVI that we could ship on a CD to prospective customers. Worked a treat!

These days you would get the card to grab the vid to the HDD and then save as MPEG for use on a DVD.

I think any good TV in card will do what you want - you pays your money....(have a look at the full specs and see if it includes the leads you require - svhs DIN etc)

But watch out for the storage! VID gobbles up hdd space.
