RAM question

Cranfield

Recommended Posts

I wish to increase the RAM on my PC, probably up to 512.

How easy is it for me to do this myself, I have a midi-tower ?

Or do I have to take my modem to a PC Centre ?

its fairly easy as long as you buy the correct ram for the motherboard.

you need the type of ram and the speed it runs at.

if you have a spare slot or 2 on the board you can add ram of the same type and size,if no spare slots you need to get a new unit of the correct type but bigger and replace whats already there.

later guys i`m going fishing

This is probably the easiest upgrade you can perform yourself. Even I've done it (although it has nothing to do with your modem!).

Basically, once you know what RAM you need (mine uses DDR), then you just shove it into the motherboard, next to the existing RAM.

It can be quite brutal, as it doesn't just glide in, usually.

Hi

The Motherboard is the big circuit board that all the other components plug into - the Mother.

Download and run Belarc Advisor from here: http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

That will give you your Motherboard make and serial. And also how many memory slots you have. Then go to Crucial, here: http://www.crucial.com/uk/promo/index.asp?...p?prog=desktop2

Input your Motherboard manufacturer and model, and it will tell you what memory your MB requires.

Cheers

Ian.

Your motherboard is that alarmingly technical looking thing inside your pc. But dont worry as you dont really need to know a lot about it. Ill let someone else describe how to find out about the ram as ill only confuse you.

ram looks like this

and it fits into slots (circled in red) that look simialr to this "usualy"

tho the slots maybe slightly different and a different colour to the pic shown

No drivers are required just fit the new ram re-start the machine and it should pic it up on its own

Hi Cranfield,

Not being rude but if you don't know what the motherboard is leave well alone.

If you have a friend who could show you the way round the inside of your pc after that it is very simple.

If not best take it back to the pc centre.

Thanks again for the help.

The appropriate RAM has been ordered and I take note of Ken's cautionary comment.

A "tour round your PC", has been arranged. :)
