Re-set to factory settings ?

My girlfriend has an XP PC and for some reason, she has played and played with the settings (at one point, there were no icons and no start button on the screen on startup) and has constantly had to get various people to play with it to try to make it work - at which point she starts playing again.

 

Is there any relativly simple way of taking the whole thing back to factory settings and starting over ?

Errasing all of her saved files isn't really a problem because I can burn them to CD's before going for it.

just go to a system restore point before her meddlings "programs" "accesories" "system tools" "system restore" you will lose any installed stuff after that point and its always best backing up mail or cookies "just incase"

to get to "as new" chuck in the system CD that came with the pc on bootup and follow the pointers,save everything valuable you need tho as it puts it back to the day it was bought.

if you have the XP disk it will attemp to repair an installation if you boot from it by reinstalling the system files etc.

if the pc refuses to boot from the cd then enter the bios (usually by pressing DEL )on bootup and go through the options looking for a "boot from" bit ,switch it to CD and on the next line DRIVE 0,if a CD isnt in the machine it will happily carry on and boot from the hard drive , dont fiddle with anything else and "save" and exit the bios
