Computer not shutting down

Norfolkdan

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I'm having trouble shutting down my computer. When pressing the power button, or going into the start menu and shut down nothing happens. Everything stays the same as though no button had been pressed.

The only way to turn it off is by switching it off at the wall...and I guess this can't be too good to do every time.

Cheers for any help, Dan

Dan

If you are running XP roll back to the last restore point when it worked, that way you can see if its hardware or software. Just to be safe do a virus scan and ad ware scan too.

Does it make any difference if you go into.

[start] --> 'Settings' --> 'Control Panel'

select 'Power Options'

click on [Advanced] tab

For the drop down menu:

"When I press the power button on my computer:"

select 'Shut Down'

Not sure if all this will work, I remember sorting this kind of thing on someones computer before but I cant remember how I did it ... this may have been how.

Press the 'windows' key (Microsoft flag) then U U to do a quick shutdown in XP.

(<Ctrl><alt><Del>) (<alt><S>) in w98 does the same.

like tog said win98 se used to do that to me and not even the patch works which came out to help this, but since upgrading to XP PRO i have had a 100%stable pute(grangers law may come knocking)

hope you sort it,maybe worth looking at finding any patches if you already haven't.

try running win setup over the top to see if its a win software prob.or rollback as said i prefer setup reinstall as it doenst hurt and may help

I had exactly the same problem with my Desktop :(

I think my father downloaded a virus to it and that was causing the problem.

After I formatted the computer, that seemed to have fixed it :S
