Or how about some water pipe over the bars as rollers. If the ends of the roof rack come off you can just slide the pipe over and it will be fixed. If not split the pipe lengthways and force it down over - I bet it will stay on once over - super glue the cut back together.

You then have a sturdy roller loading system.
