Codecs For Media Player?

I am getting a message on my windows media player saying that one or more codecs are missing to play avi movies that I downloaded...............anyone got any ideas or know which codecs are required?

I`m running win xp pro with service pack 2 , ,........and it`s windows medial player 10

Search for a program called Gspot (yes seriously that is the programs name) as its a prog which tells you which codecs a file needs, and it also tells you if the required codec is installed.

 

Also have a look at the VLC media player (its free), I`ve never had to install any codecs whilst using that

i use tight VLC, it plays everything ive ever thrown at it, it even plays files that you are still downloading, ie your dling say, finding nemo for your kids, and you want to check that its not some yucky porn disguised as poor old nemo, it will play it for you as its dling, great prog.
