Heed this advice.... never tackle plumbing jobs unless the DIY shops are open or if you are ABSOLUTELY sure you've got everything you could possibly need!

Incredibly helpful stuff in just a couple of hours. I'm really grateful. It sounds as if PTFE tape or the sealants Chris G recommends are alternatives, but I can't resist the possibility of making Chris bare his bottom on the town hall steps, so I'll PM Chris for his sealant!

FT ..word of warning, do not overtighten the joint if it is plastic. Usually they are Knurled for hand tight and Hexagon for spanner tight. You may find that your existing one has been crossthreaded.

 

If it is the supply pipe then be extra careful, they often only have short threads and are very easily overtightened.
