Well I've just this minute added this to the glossary ...

"The Lift Method

Highly effective stillwater float fishing technique popularised by the Taylor brothers in the 1950's. Particularly suited to finnicky biters such as Tench and Crucians. The essence of fishing the lift method is to set the float - I use a traditional quill - a little over depth. Attached bottom end only with a piece of tubing - NOT shot. It's important that there is no shot ANY where near the float. All your shot , a BB, AA or SSG depending on how far you need to cast, should be fixed 2-4 inches from the hook.

Bites are indicated by the float lifting or laying completely flat. It's imperative that you strike as the float lifts. Thus you will convert considerably more bites into fish if you hold the rod through out. "

My favourite baits for tench are cockles (get fresh, frozen or in brine - not vinegar) fished in a cocktail with bronze maggot and black pudding. If the water permits it and is suitable - ie not too silty - I'm a great fan of raking the swim - tench will come and investigate and look for natural offerings...
