Super Specialist Duo?

Paul..Try and check out the TFG Whisper River and Stream, it has two tops (standard and quiver) and

has a full cork handle and for 49.99 you will well pleased. Some people knock TFG but this little rod is

a corker for the money and a great small stream Roach Rod.

Thanks, Martin - I'll check it out. I'm not in the market for heavier test curved Barbel Quivers, having designed and built some pretty fine ones years ago, keeping an 11ft standard BQ with overfit quivers and a 12ft (never retailed) Special for future personal use on the day I said to myself: "Right, stuff rod-building - I'm going fishing!"

GP Rods....ah yes, I well remember the phone call I had with you many years ago, you

sold the 12ft Barbel trotter to me there and then with your description of how good a rod

it was on the Kennet and goodness me what a rod it is. Carp to nearly 30lbs Big Chub and Tench and not forgetting old whiskers. Have the 11ft BQ to, nothing has come close IMO.

TFG Whsper is about 1lb 2oz tc and have seen them for sale for 49.99 which is as cheap as chips.

Thanks, Martin. My own (plus a one-off 13ft Barbel Trotter that I never got around to retailing) is still going strong. Caught me lots of coarse fish and mullet, and salmon to 17.25 pounds.

I have just tracked down, with some difficulty, 'possibly the last' old TFG River & Stream at £49.99 in Britain, and have bought it.

Many thanks.

Well, that's all sorted. Yesterday was my birthday, and SWMBO[1] bought me the Super Specialist Duo and an Aventa Pro centrepin. Very happy with both, and can't wait to try them out. Going to give the Thames a go on the South Cerney water near Lechlade. I was hoping to sneak out this afternoon, but I don't think I'll finish work in time.

Ah Lechlade, just the sound of the word :) Reminds me of staying with my uncle+aunt in Swindon in the 60's. Unc used to drop me off at Lechlade for a day's roaching with wheat and bread paste for bait. Used to buy a day ticket at the shop and walk *through* the back of the shop into a minor fishing paradise ;) <sigh>

I've happily used the Shimano Super Specialist combo rod for most of my coarse fishing for quite a while now, and it's a nice rod. The only trouble is that a cack handed git like moi has managed to cream the Avon tip section at least three times, and a replacement is virtually the same cost as the whole rod. Last season though I upgraded to a Greys rod which has a lifetime guarantee against accidental damage. Seemed like a bargain to me??

If you like I'll check out the day ticket options for a milder weekend?

You will not go wrong with the TFG river and stream mate,i`ve had mine since they came out and for big roach, perch and chub they are superb.Alot of Avon style rods tend to be 12ft,but i prefere 11ft due to the small rivers and backbrooks i fish.Even though its under-gunned for big barbel fishing i safely landed an 11lb.4oz barbel with this rod whilst chub fishing.
