Use three hooks, if the match allows. You have 3 times more chance of getting one. You might even get a double shot! ;) You can also experiment with different bait combinations.

Use the rig that you mentioned with a flyer if you fishing a match you need to have as many baits in the water that is permited to be on an even field with the rest of the competeters. frozen sandeel always seems to switch on the doggies for me tie em on if you have to power cast.

I tend to use half a small sandeel giving it a few whips of bait elastic to keep it on. A 4/0 does the trick for me.

dunno what a flyer is probably a spare baited trace so you can reel one in and clip on the other so as you have a bait in the water all the time and dont waste time baiting up. While one trace is in the water you bait up the other :)

A Flyer is an extra baited hook on a snood conected to the main trace paternoster style Just puts an extra bait in the water, used often in inshore boat angling if the main target is for example cod you can fish a smaller Hook/ Bait for whiting ect. Sods Law states that you catch the big fish on the small Hook so beware.

In matches once you have cast out, a flyer is a hooklength on a clip that is slid down the line, sometimes with a small weight or float(for gars) it is a way of fishing at distance, but also in close, because if you fish with quite a slack line you can fish the flyer on the bottom, good when scratching for flounders, rockling etc. When you reel in the clip either stops on the top of your trace or at your leader knot. Can pick up the occasional fish when things are quiet.

what you need it three hooks clipped up using cascade swivels, n size 2 hooks preferably kamasans b940 this will allow you to fish either rag or lug tipped with either a thumb nail size of mackeral or a half chunk of medium ammo sandeel!! Head hook the rag or lug n whip it into the sandeel/mackeral! if your fishing into darkness use lumi beads and stop knots(shrink tube would be ideal).
