Data useless? Very possibly but more due to the drive not being able to 'read' what is there even though your stuff is still there and still fine.

 

Think of a large mirror such as the ladies have on a dressing table. If you scrape portions of the opaque backing off and use the mirror in a well lighted room, those portions are small windows and totally unable to reflect images back to you.
