big eye tuna caught at christchurch bay

just a thought that stands to reason, we never had resident cod stocks in the english channel before the severe winters of the early sixties it was only that the water temperature got so low then, that the cod stayed there instead of migrating back to the eastern part of the north sea. the mature fish moving on to the deep water wrecks. now after four decades of heavy fishing of the wrecks there is very little of that stock left or there decendents, also the water temperature is increasing all the time so no cod will ever replace that stock so i think its curtains for a resident cod stock here unfortunately. but they will be replaced by warmer water species like tunas and jacks hopefully, the water temperature has reached 70+ degrees every august for the last several years reaching a high of 72 degrees thats only 8 degrees less than the gulf of mexico this time of year.

Hi Lads, I took the pics and the skipper reckoned it was a yellowfin although I have soem doubts, It is not a blue or black fin, the fins are totally wrong. I have a big game expert looking at the pics on Sunday, I will keep you posted

We've been catching the odd stray Albacore (Longfin Tuna) while Pollacking off SW Ireland for the last couple of years. There's a boat in Caherciveen that I believe actually targets them occassionaly now, using trolling gear/tactics.

I love these I.D games.

It does have a good Albacore shape, but the Albacore has an extra-long pectoral fin, that reaches past the anal fin.

Albacore food value: White, relatively tastless flesh makes it less of a treat than other Tunas.

Can some one ask the pubs clients? :D
