Another newbie looking for advice

Hi everyone,

i'm looking for some advice on which kayak to buy.

i'm 6 ft tall and weigh in at about 210-220lbs & i intend to fish mainly around the tywyn, dysni, aberdyfi area(as i already do a lot of beachcasting here) to start with but with possible trips elsewhere. mostly seafishing but maybe some freshwater as well. from what i can tell most people seem to favour prowler 13's and 15's but ive seen some positve reviews of malibu x-factors , pro-explorers , ocean drifters and perception caster 12.5's but these have mainly been on american sites so i'm unsure of their relevence to the uk scene.

any advice or guidance would be helpful as i have no kayaking experience and to be honest the designs all look very similar to me.

The only one I wouldnt advise of those is the Drifter. The best thing is to go to a dealer and give the others a go and see which suits best. Once you have narrowed down your choice a bit more then we can get into the nitty gritty. Sounds to me as though the P13 on paper could be first choice from that list. A lot will depend on whether you intend to cover distance, the cockpit fit and how narrow those rivers are.

Fished since 2003, the rest of my life I just wasted.

Got to say Richi she does look bloody nice old boy :)

HI Snakey 1

I am in the same boat (sorry about the pun) the lads here have been really fantastic with advise,

it would be worth trolling back through the posts, there is a wealth of experience at your fingertips

use the search facility, pick a model you are interested in, put a search in and there you go probably 400 posts to look at : )

oh by the way lads I am edging towards p13 :yeah:

Hi,

Great area to fish you have there, very jealous indeed. Which kayak to choose is a very personal thing, like Darnsar has already said the Drifter is designed for the larger americans backside so not ideal for anybody with a normal build.

Take a look at this link for starters

http://www.paddlermagazine.com/fishing/boat_review.shtml

They get along to a local dealer and sit in a few, one will feel right, try and get a paddle.

I've paddled the Towyn area and it can get quite rough so you will need something that is easy and efficient to paddle, Prowlers and Scuppers come to mind, Personal choice would be the Prowler 13, it has a huge cockpit and is very seaworthy, others here prefer the Scupper Pro, horses for courses.

Hey you know me Scupper through and through but what made me suggest P13 is your size and the fact that you are looking at fishing rivers. The Scupper is superb but not made for larger paddlers (38" waist +) and is a long beast and manouverability in tight spaces isnt its strong point. On open sea its a different matter. I'M always honest. (ish)

Would have thought that SMs Tarpon 140 could go on the list as well.

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks for the advice guys, me and a mate are off to our local supplier to checkout the prowler 13's and also the tarpon 140's in the next couple of weeks.

just come back from beach session in tywyn this weekend we managed to land 4 bass, 1 codling, about 17 doggies, a couple of whiting, a couple of turbot and a small eyed ray. the sea was choppy on the sat and sunday but monday was like a mill pond.
